Neulasta Follow-up

Dec 11th, 2008 Posted in Hodgkin's Status Update | no comment »

I promised I would report back once I’d had a few Neulasta shots, for the edification of other Neulasta takers.

For those of you NOT contemplating medical solutions to boosting your white blood cell counts, this post may fall in the “too much information” category, although the physiological details aren’t too gory. But if you’re squeamish, wait for my next post, which will be about unicorns and fuzzy pink slippers.

Now I Understand Drugs

Dec 10th, 2008 Posted in Hodgkin's Status Update | no comment »

It’s 8:30 pm and I’m finishing up work. I started at 6:00am and, except for a break for my biweekly injection, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I’ve been working steadily all day. Without even a temptation to nap.

Steroids. Wow.

Fear not, faithful readers: I am not overworking. Taking plenty of breaks, eating well, drinking lots of water (though I should be drinking more — working on it!). In part I’m trying to work off the steroids so I can sleep through the night. I figure I’ll be a wet noodle Saturday and Sunday, so I’m getting ahead of things now.

On that note, I’m going to go sit in our newly rearranged living room and read, in between moving the sprinkler around the lawn so that our new, beautiful landscaping doesn’t die off. (It’s a drought, we’re only allowed to water new plantings and that only before 8am or after 6pm. Hence the nighttime watering.)

Chemo #4, Realtime

Greetings from the infusion room! I am sitting in my usual spot (at one end of the L-shaped room, watching the good nurses in the injection/blood work room do their thing). My laptop shares an outlet with my infusion monitor, and I’m using the wireless connection they’ve set up so we chemo patients can amuse ourselves while being pumped full of toxic chemicals. w00t!

I have been rebuked by the Wild Dancing Woman of Hoboken for being remiss in posting, so my first order of business today was to write a properly penitent post. I’m not even connected to my port yet! Read on, dear, devoted, neglected readers. Read on.

Good Counts, Sad News

Dec 2nd, 2008 Posted in Hodgkin's Status Update | 3 comments »

I have been away from my blogging post for many days, but I am returning.

My blood work this morning came back with good results: white blood cells are kicking ass thanks to the Neulasta, and red blood cells and platelets are on the lowish side but holding steady.

Our beloved Maddison died on Friday, which I can still scarcely believe. Her kidneys were stressed beyond their capacity by an attack of pancreatitis. We had known for while that Sudz was not long for this world, but losing Maddison was a shock, especially barely a month after Sudz died. We are sad.

Tonight I’m going to drum circle to bang on things.
